Across the schoolyard, a student dips a brush into turquoise paint and spreads it on his paper canvas. Under the slide, another young child builds a castle out of buckets while her friend digs a moat in the fresh, cool sand. A teacher kneels inside the front gate, welcoming a new student to our preschool. In the wooden playhouse, two kids stir a pretend soup while a working parent places an order at the window. Another teacher sits between two students as they figure out together who is next to drive the toy bus. A group of students dash up the stairs and laugh their way down the slide.
WPNS is a co-operative, parent participation, play-based preschool. We have been part of the Westchester community for more than 60 years and are one of the original area preschools offering a Pre-K program for our students.
Our goal is to instill a love of learning in both our children and our families. Our care and instruction provide tools that prepare children to learn confidently and to develop strong thinking skills as they work their way through preschool and ready themselves for kindergarten and beyond.
Our preschool provides a cooperative environment that encourages a love of learning, respectful communication and community. We recognize and appreciate the unique qualities of each child and structure our learning environment and curriculum to meet the individual needs of our young students. As a play-based preschool, we also encourage creativity and fun in a safe and natural environment where fresh air and riding a tricycle are as important as learning the ABC’s.
We recognize and appreciate the unique qualities of each child…WPNS’ parent participation model provides an environment that allows for children to learn confidently and for parents to develop strong support systems. Our environment offers our families the opportunity to be involved in their children’s education, as well as develop supportive relationships that carry on for years. These provide both children and adults a network that has proven invaluable to the WPNS community – both past and present.
As part of the co-operative model, WPNS holds monthly membership meetings that promote parental involvement. We also present monthly Parent Education classes for our parents and the community, covering such topics as kindergarten readiness, conflict resolution and sibling issues.
We welcome you to bring your child and play with us during our school hours. Call today to arrange a play date or a tour of the school. (310) 670-5522.
