Beyond the School Day . . .
As the school year gets underway, you’ll find that the WPNS calendar is quite full!
Here is a description of most of the events coming up this year. This is intended to give you a general idea of what to expect and to help you plan ahead – you’ll get all the details at membership meetings and through flyers and emails.
Monthly Events…
- Membership Meetings: Held the first Tuesday of every month from 7-9pm, these meetings are mandatory for all families. Critical information is communicated at membership meetings, and it’s during these meetings that Joyce fills us in on what we need to know as working parents. Childcare is provided ($5 per child), but you must sign up for childcare the Friday before the meeting.
- Parent Education: WPNS has an amazing Parent Education program, through which we bring in speakers to broaden our horizons as parents of young children. There’s something for everyone: connecting with our kids, kindergarten readiness, setting limits, understanding magnet and charter schools, keeping our kids safe from predators, playing creatively with our kids . . . Parent Ed meetings are usually on Tuesday nights from 7-9pm. They open to the public, and childcare is provided for WPNS families for $5 per child (you must sign up for childcare the Friday before the meeting). Parents are required to attend at least two Parent Ed meetings per year.
- “Chat-Downs” with teachers: These Friday afternoon meetings are great opportunities for parents to ask questions, discuss things that may be going on at home or school, and find support in the fact that they aren’t alone in their challenges. All parents are welcome! Please let Joyce know in advance if you need someone to care for your child during the chat-down.
- Field Trips: One of our amazing parents has the job of organizing a school-wide field trip each month. Some field trips have become annual traditions, and they’re included below. Each family pays a “field trip fee” at the beginning of the year that covers the cost of field trips for enrolled students. Parents provide the transportation, but carpooling is encouraged. School is closed on field trip days so the teachers can join us. “Tags” are welcome to attend, too. If you are scheduled as a working parent on a field trip day, you attend the field trip and help with whatever is needed. We also have a few “in-house” field trips, when we invite a guest to school for a special presentation. School is open for “in-house” field trips.
